Hokule'a Recount

Last week on Wednesday the two Wakas that we have all been learning about came to Point England Beach. It was the Hokule’a and Hikianalia! Image result for Hokule'a Point England reserve
And on that day all of the schools that are apart of the Manaiakalani cluster came on buses and all schools including Point England sat down on grass by the beach. Khaia and I were on the sand recording the Hokule’a and Hikianalia which was sailing towards the beach. While we were waiting I wrote on the sand ‘Welcome Hokule’a from PES’ but it didn’t last long as people were walking all over it. At least it got filmed by the Hokule’a film crew.

It was a very hot day and when the people on the Wakas came onto the beach all the schools did a Waiata to greet them. We also sang Maori songs and when we were finished they sang a song to us. After that one of the Hokule’a crew members stepped forward and was given a microphone and he said a speech about how we are the ‘Children of the Navigators’.

Then Mr Burt told us that we will be able to shake the Hokule’a and Hikianalia crew members hands. Point England school was first to shake their hands or high five them and then it was another schools turn.

It took a long time for all the schools to have their turn but Khaia and I stayed behind until Mrs Lagitupu told us we had to go back to school. We missed out on our morning tea but that was okay and had a great day listening to the Hokule’a and Hikianalia crew sing and their speech. We really are the Children of the Navigators.

It was a real privilege meeting them because what they are doing really inspires me to do my best at my work. Wednesday was like a once in a life time event that I will never forget.

Dictation Practice

Once again, pig and Wolf came face to face and things             aren't looking good for the pigs. Who will protect the             Emperor? Is there anyone who will answer his high pitch squeal for help? Anyone at all? Better bang that gong ping pong!

I am Oink no ho, Adviser to the great Emperor and Priest of the Monastery of Wu-Dah-Ling. I am here to tell you of the Kung-Fu Pigs and of how they fought to defend our lands against that most evil Traitor, The Crimson Trotter (He who keeps the company of wolfs). In the tale you will learn of bandits and of foul play. Of magic swords and evil spells. And so, Honorable stranger let us begin...

Video conference with Hawaiian schools

Today in the year 7 and 8 Extension we had a video conference with 2 schools. One of them is Kea'au and the other is Nanakuli and they are both from Hawaii. We used google hangouts to talk to them. We all talked about our schools and our learning. One of the schools showed us a movie of there school.

Kea’au Elementary school is in Hawaii and they have 870 students there and their community are the fastest growing area’s in Hawaii. Their grades go from preschool to grade 5 and they have a population of 17,047. They mainly speak in Hawaiian.

The Hokulea Waka is going to come to Point England Beach on the 24th of March and we will be able to talk with the crew, the Manaiakalani schools will be there too. They are going all around the pacifica islands and then they will go all around the world after new Zealand . They are using traditional navigation methods as our ancestors.

The one thing that I thought was interesting was the lava that go into town and everyone had to relocated and they say that there is a fire goddess called Pele.
