Tamaki college Experience day Recount

It was a cloudy day as the year eights of Point England school lined up ready to go to Tamaki college. We were going there to see what college was like by going into college classes. This is also to prepare as for next year when we turn into year nines. I was excited and nervous at the same time, because I always thought that college was going to be hard and going to Tamaki might prove my theory. As we were walking to Tamaki I was happily chatting with my Friend Brooklyn who was my walking partner, we both laughed and had fun walking but the real fun began when we entered the Tamaki Auditorium.

The Auditorium was filled with the sound of foot steps as we all took our seats at the end of the Auditorium, at the other end was a small stage. We were welcomed by Mrs Moore the deputy principal, who gave a small speech about Tamaki and what they expect from us. We were all split into 3 large groups named A, B and C, I was put in group C. Each group were given guides who were Tamaki students, I knew that all of them used to come to Point England. In my group our guides were year eights last year! It was great to see them when we were dismissed by the Mrs Moore our guides took us to social studies.

We traveled for about 2 minutes until we came across a classroom with two teachers inside. In social studies we learnt about a pepeha which is like a speech about where we come from. Then we were given a task where we had to get into a group of 7 and pick a leader of our group. I got into a group of girls and we chose Losekoula as our leader. We also had to chose a speaker to say the pepeha and Mele stood up to say it and I thought she did really well! Our next class was maths! I really like maths so I was excited to go. When we entered the maths class, we sat down and the maths teacher introduced herself to the class. She started to tell us how she actually teaches business but was given the job to teach us some maths. So she began teaches us some algebra which was cool. Maths went by fast and soon after we left to go back to the auditorium for interval.

So far I had a pretty good start. When we were all settled in our seats Mrs Moore was back and told us that former Point Englanders were going to talk to us about Tamaki and give some advice for the kids going there. They gave us some cool advice like when we go to college just be yourself cause thats the best you can be, try your best in school and listen to what the teacher is saying. It was really cool to hear from them and that they made me feel more comfortable for next year. Next was interval! Where me and some of my friends decided to explore Tamaki. It’s small and I found it easy to find my way around the school. It felt a bit weird to be surrounded by college kids, but the feeling soon disappeared when we got to go to our normal technology classes. In our technology classes we go to different classes like Food tech, Graphics, Hard materials and Music. We change classes each school term and this term I was in food tech, and we got to make burgers! My friend Brooklyn and I paired up and we cooked together. It was lots of fun and I loved putting the burgers together. Lunch was after that and it was the perfect time to eat my burger. All the year eights ate outside the auditorium. For lunch everyone was given a Subway sandwich which made everyone full and happy.

Our last class was English and we had to find our classes by ourselves! We were in our three groups and were given instructions to go to the class we were told. My class was called B2 and I was happy that I was one of the first people to get there. When our teacher came she let us in with a smile and we rushed in to the class. Our teachers name is Ms George and she is a really fun teacher. We got to play Kahoot where we had to answer questions about Literacy terms like metaphors and similes. I was really excited doing the quiz because I had learnt about these things this year and do you know what happend… I came first! I was sooo happy and Ms George wrote my name on the board and said she was going to give me a prize next term! After Kahoot we were given the task to create out own timeline which means we had to write down all the major events in our lives. We had to write ten of them and Juliet and I were the first ones to finish!

I had a great time in English but now it was time to move on to P.E. All the three groups met in the basketball court and we met two of the P.E teachers. We were given to options we could either stay inside and play some activities or go outside and do some rugby drills. Since I’m not a rugby player I stayed inside where we played a game where it was like dodge ball but you couldn’t run with the ball, so you had to pass to your team so you could get someone out. It was soo much fun and I got out a few times but thats okay. It was really hard to try and get the ball from the other team without getting tagged. After a couple of rounds we had to go back to the auditorium.

It was a really fun day but it came to an end as we got one final talk from the second deputy principle who told us that college isn’t hard even though it seems to be. Two of our school prefects stood up to thank the deputy principle for the opportunity to come to Tamaki. Then it was time to say goodbye and go home. I had lots of fun at Tamaki and I have now learnt that college is going to be fine next year if I just work hard and try my best! Now I can’t wait for college!!
