Last week on Wednesday the two Wakas that we have all been learning about came to Point England Beach. It was the Hokule’a and Hikianalia!
And on that day all of the schools that are apart of the Manaiakalani cluster came on buses and all schools including Point England sat down on grass by the beach. Khaia and I were on the sand recording the Hokule’a and Hikianalia which was sailing towards the beach. While we were waiting I wrote on the sand ‘Welcome Hokule’a from PES’ but it didn’t last long as people were walking all over it. At least it got filmed by the Hokule’a film crew.
It was a very hot day and when the people on the Wakas came onto the beach all the schools did a Waiata to greet them. We also sang Maori songs and when we were finished they sang a song to us. After that one of the Hokule’a crew members stepped forward and was given a microphone and he said a speech about how we are the ‘Children of the Navigators’.
Then Mr Burt told us that we will be able to shake the Hokule’a and Hikianalia crew members hands. Point England school was first to shake their hands or high five them and then it was another schools turn.
It took a long time for all the schools to have their turn but Khaia and I stayed behind until Mrs Lagitupu told us we had to go back to school. We missed out on our morning tea but that was okay and had a great day listening to the Hokule’a and Hikianalia crew sing and their speech. We really are the Children of the Navigators.
It was a real privilege meeting them because what they are doing really inspires me to do my best at my work. Wednesday was like a once in a life time event that I will never forget.
